March 2008 Crossing Turks & Caicos to Miami

March 2008 Crossing Turks & Caicos to Miami

At the end of March 2008, Bart & Jaki Hofherr and Denny & Paula Felver flew to Turks & Caicos and made the trip back to Miami on the sailboat, Juliet. The crossing from Turks & Caicos back to Miami was an adventure, not just a dive trip. We boarded the Juliet in Provo and started diving the sites around West Caicos. After three dives we moved all night (80 miles) on to Southeast Cay Wall at Hogsty Reef. We saw several Eagle Rays during these dives. The dive sites here were very nice. From here we moved on to Conception Island. We traveled 100 miles in about 19 hours. The dive sites here were pristine and Bart saw a hammerhead shark. I was on the dive with Bart & Jaki and saw the shark but I wasn’t close enough to identify it. Several of us went to a beach around Conception Island. I collected some shells, got great pictures and saw the sound on the far side of the island. The boat moved all night to Little San Salvadore. We had a couple of great dives here with some great pictures of flamingo tongue snails, lizzard fish, butter fly fish, trumpetfish, several spotted goatfish and a queen triggerfish to name a few. There were many swim throughs that made great diving as well as the lionfish started showing up. From here we moved on to Eleathera and then onto the Exumas. After some diving here we were on our way to Nassau. A bottle nose dolphin accompanied us part of the way. After docking the Juliet, Jaki and I and others went in the skiff to do some shopping at the Straw Market in Nassau while Captain John cleared us through customs. Jaki and I went shopping for jewelry. I found a great angelfish necklace with some ear rings that went nicely with the necklace. From here we moved over to the Gingerbread Grounds and did several dives in this area. We ended with our last dive of the trip on April 6that Bull Run. You just can’t have a better ending than with the sharks circling you and giving you a great photo opportunity.
